Working with a Poet

We recently worked with local poet Ken Harris.

In Clydach Junior School the headteacher and staff have chosen to focus on the development of speaking and listening. Over two days, each class received over an hour’s input, and at the end of each day there was a plenary session where pupils read out the work produced during these sessions. Though the work is written down, it is the product of lots of drama and speaking and listening activities, which involved the use of quality texts.

During the two-day workshop there were a number of other speaking and listening activities which do not appear in this document. For example, we read a number of stories using the cloze procedure technique, with the teacher omitting words for the children to replace. This really built on their spoken language and also on their understanding of narrative structure. We used other interactive books, like Mrs Smith’s Crocodile and The Scarecrow’s Hat, which were dramatized or used in other similar activities.
All pupils were involved in the classroom activities. They benefited from and enjoyed the teaching strategies employed. Every pupil who was in school for the workshops is represented on this page. I like to think that each child will feel a sense of achievement that his or her work had been judged as being of sufficient quality to be published in this way.

In Miss Fowler’s class, 6F, we focused on the Welsh folk tale, ‘Gwion and the Witch’ which tells the story of Taliesyn. We discussed the ‘shape-shifter’ aspect of the story and talked about the possibility of having existed in many forms over time.  First I scribed the class suggestions, then pupils worked in groups to produce extra text:

He remembered being an angel visiting Jesus.

He was once the statue of liberty, bright and tall, standing in New York.

He was the joy known by Adam and Eve.

He was also the first colour in the rainbow and the last number ever written.

He was the first monkey, swinging from branch to branch.

He was sorry to be the iceberg that sank the Titanic.

He was a sword used by a Roman soldier.

He was even a massive giant who trod on people who annoyed him. Taliesyn was a drop of poison that killed Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. He was the Welsh dragon that fought and killed the English dragon.

He was once a coelacanth, an ancient fish which lived in the depths of the ocean.

He was the last wife who survived Henry The Eighth.

He was Queen Victoria when he died in 1901.

What a life he led!

Taliesyn was the Tardis in which Doctor Who travelled through time to a parallel universe.

He was even an assistant to Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War.

He was the world’s best swordsman and won many duels. He was glad to be the bullet that killed Hitler.

He was an evil serpent who told Eve to pluck the apple from the tree of knowledge.

He was proud to be the engine of the first petrol-driven car invented in Germany.

Once he was a snowflake on Everest.

He was even the atomic bomb that landed in Japan and killed millions of people to end World War Two.

Many years ago he was the most powerful wizard on earth.

He was sorry that he was the tsunami that drowned thousands of people.

He was the star above the stable where Jesus was born.

He remembered being one of the first animals to walk onto Noah’s ark.

He was even the letter B on the cover of a bible.

What an exciting life he’d lived!

When Pandora opened the box
She set free:
The bloodshot eyes of Madness
The violent hands of War
The slouching shoulders of Laziness
The cheap cotton rags of Poverty
The sharp tongue of Disease
The green eyes of Evil
The blood-red knives of Murder
The empty, baggy belly of Hunger
But there was still Hope!

Layla Barber and Connor

When Pandora opened the box
She set free:
The wide wrinkles of Old Age
The cruel whips of Slavery
The throbbing head of Pain
The torn clothes of Poverty
The pulsing, red eyes of Madness
The metal handcuffs of Crime
The kicking feet of Temper
The empty stomach of Hunger
But there was still Hope!

Shannon and Daniel

When Pandora opened the box
She set free:
The slow limp of Old Age
The salty tears of Loneliness
The terrible charge of War
The broken bones of cruelty
The dry mouth of Hunger
The sleepy eyes of Laziness
The awful anger of Temper
The damaged heart of Death
But there was still Hope!

Ellena and Scott

When Pandora opened the box
She set free:
The wrinkled skin of Old Age
The horrible smell of Disease
The wringing hands of Madness
The weeping eyes of Sadness
The sagging shoulders of Laziness
The hideous skull of Death
But there was still Hope!

Shannon

When Pandora opened the box
She set free:
The horrible madness of Jealousy
The evil thoughts of Racism
The hurtful tongue of Spite
The sobbing eyes of Loneliness
The sad heart of Sorrow
The empty stomach of Hunger
The evil cry of Death
But there was still Hope!

I am Laziness.

I make people want to sit around and do nothing.

I make them not interested in anything.

I make them useless for anything. All they do is eat and sit around.

Ryan

I am Madness.

I make people crazy so that everyone will make fun of them. They will be sent to mental hospitals.

My eyes are red and I carry a chainsaw.

When people look into my eyes they go crazy too.

I really enjoy what I do!

Jamie Quinn

I am Jealousy.

I make people wish that they were as famous as pop stars.

I like it when people want something that they can’t have.

I can make then so upset because somebody else has a nicer house or car or more money.

I laugh at them.

Shane Morris Jones and Daniel Sayce

I am Disaster.

I make millions drown in the tsunami.

I make millions lose their homes as well.

I can make eruptions and send lava down the mountains, burning towns and people.

I love it when people scream.

I can be quiet for ages and then explode.

I love to ruin people’s lives.

It makes me so happy!

Paul Dell, Alex McGlynn
Sophie Gwillim and Lauren Beer

I am Murder.

I make people want to kill each other.

Sometimes I make people kill their own family!

I make them shoot or stab or poison each other.

I make terrorists blow people up.

I am mad!

Thomas Davies

I am Death.

I wear black clothes and my head is just a skull.

I stop people breathing so their friends will be sad.

I send human beings to live in hell.

I will come to all mankind and no one will escape me!

Ethan Greenacre and Llewellyn Smith

In Mrs McComas’ Class 3M we read ‘The Giant’s Goblet’ a creation myth with a Welsh flavour. In the tale, the giant creates all living things. We approached this from the standpoint that the creatures would not yet have had names, hence you could not say ‘dog’, instead you’d describe ‘ a species that wagged its tail and barked a lot ‘.
We produced a collaborative piece where I scribed for the class, then the children worked in groups.

In the beginning the earth was just an enormous rock floating in space. Then the giant had a brilliant idea. He’d turn the earth into a beautiful garden full of animals. He made a huge, grey beast which had tusks, a long trunk and flappy-floppy ears. He imagined a tiny, black and yellow striped thing that flew. It drank the juice of flowers and turned it into sweet yellow food. There was a large striped creature that roared and hunted for prey. He created an animal that had no arms or legs. It slithered and hissed and had venomous fangs. There was even a miniature creature with eight legs that spun silky webs to trap food. It was a wonderful time when everything was new and exciting!

In the beginning the earth was just an enormous rock floating in space. Then the giant had a brilliant idea. He’d turn the earth into a beautiful garden full of animals. There was a massive creature with gaps in its teeth. It lived in rivers in hot countries and likes to bath in mud. There was another species that lived in the water. It caught fish and wasn’t seen very often. There was a dangerous black and yellow striped living thing. It was a wonderful time when everything was new and exciting!

In Mrs Fardoe’s class we read the story of Orpheus in the Underworld. We talked about the magical powers of his lyre and the children suggested what miracles it might accomplish. We also found different ways of saying ‘when he played his lyre’ – when he plucked when he strummed, when he performed, etc.

When Orpheus played his lyre, volcanoes erupted into streams of fresh, cool milk.

When he plucked the strings, soldiers stopped fighting and helped their enemies.

When he played his instrument, flowers blossomed through the winter snow.

When he sang his song, a tornado became a light breeze.

Seeds sprouted in seconds and crunchy dead leaves came to life again.

When Orpheus played his music, the clouds disappeared and the sun shone on him like a spotlight. When he performed, everyone came from all around the world to enjoy and admire his fabulous talent.

Class 3/4F

When Orpheus sang, fishermen stopped to listen and the fish escaped from their nets and buckets.

When he played his music, dead grass made the valleys beautiful and green.

When he performed the rain went away and the sun came out. Dragons stopped breathing fire. When he played his instrument, rabbits hopped around in joy and the scarecrow didn’t feel so tatty. Spiders broke their webs and set the insects free.

Polluted rivers became really clean when he played.

When Orpheus sang, starving children felt full up.

The gods even came down from heaven to join in the chorus, and for the first time, the world was good.

Becky, James, Georgia, Joshua, Hannah Lewis, Gaby Hornshaw, and Kieran T

When Orpheus sang his songs, all the fluffy rabbits sat around him and listened to his poems.

When he sang, everyone that was ill got better again.

When he played, flowers, grass, and olive trees sprang up from the ground.

When he played his lovely, sweet songs, all the fish came to listen. When he plucked the instrument, zebras and hedgehogs and sheep came to watch and listen.

When he played, people stopped fighting each other.

Mountains erupted in streams of apple juice.

When he sang, everyone helped each other and there were no more dictators.

When he plucked the strings, animals stopped killing other animals.

When he played his music, his wife came alive again.

When he sang so sweetly, people came to enjoy.

When he played his graceful tunes, all the people in the world listened to him.

They circled round him and admired his talent and he became the most popular person in the world.

He was one of the nails hammered into the hands and feet of Jesus at the crucifixion.

Before that he was the last dinosaur to die before the species became extinct.

Once he was an eagle’s nest perched high on a mountain peak.

He was even the monster, so they say, lurking in the depths of Loch Ness.

He remembered being King of England and beheading some of his wives.

In Africa, he was a huge lion roaming the plains with his pride.

He was the giant who chased Jack and fell down the beanstalk and broke his neck.

He was upset at being Hitler and murdering millions of people.

He was happiest as a dog who loved his master and enjoyed long walks in the woods.

He was the very first apple on earth.
He was a flame in the first Olympic torch.
Later he was one of the children of Queen Victoria.
He remembered being the first man to walk on the moon.
He was the helmet that saved the first man to crash at over one hundred miles an hour.
He was the farm cockerel, proud of his coloured feathers.
He was a Victorian child on a rocking horse.
He remembered being Hitler and killing people.
Recently he was a terrorist who blew places to bits.
He cried when he remembered being the first British plane to be shot down in World War Two.
He was sorry to be the Apocalypse that destroyed the earth.
He had an interesting time!

In Mr Snelling’s class, 5/6S, we read the story of Pandora. I asked the children to ascribe physical characteristics to the troubles of the world – the cold stare of Death, for example. Again we worked on a class poem first:

When Pandora opened the box
She set free:
The rotten teeth of Old Age
The spiteful sting of Cruelty
The rumbling stomach of Hunger
The pounding fists of War
The wide, staring eyes of Madness
The bored yawn of Laziness
But there was still Hope!

Class 4M used the same story to write a fractured narrative, where the troubles spoke for themselves, as it were. This format leads very naturally into performing the finished work.

I am Old Age.
I make people have rotten teeth and become all wrinkly.
I mock them and make them rot. They lose all their hair and they lose their taste.
I can make them forget who they are.
I love my work!

Daniel Davies, Ryan Gittins and Amy-Louise Davies

I am Evil.
I make people behave badly and kill for no reason.
I say nasty things to them to make them cruel.
I hate happiness and goodness and I want everything and everyone to die.

Adam, Connor, Ronie Easling

I am Fire.
I love to see people’s skin crackling and blistering and scorching.
I love their screams when they are burning.
When I am gone, all I leave behind me is ashes!

I am Loneliness. Nobody talks to me.
I live in darkness with only ghosts around me.
Old people hate to meet me.

I am War.
I love the sounds of gunshot and bombs exploding.
I like skeletons on the battlefield. I steal men from their wives and children and parents.
I think murderers are good.
I carry a shield and a sword and a spear and a gun and a bomb.
I make people and countries quarrel.
I enjoy watching armies fighting.
I like to hear the screaming and shouting when they die.
I love my work!

Sophie Novak, Tamara Morris, Alex Thomas and Jay Davies

I am destruction.
I love the sight of trees on fire.
I adore the sound of gunshots.
I love the sight of blood and I am very happy with my work.

There was a creature that could run faster than all the animals. It was yellow and had black spots on its fur. There was another one which walked very slowly and had a shell. When Orpheus played his harp the dogs stopped chasing cats.

When he sang his songs, blind people could see.

When he strummed the lyre, people who were sad began to smile and laugh and the crashing waves became little waves.

Horses galloped along to his music.

When Orpheus played, volcanoes erupted with candy floss.

When he performed his music, sharks started to eat seaweed. People came from far and wide to hear his music and his songs.

When Orpheus played his lyre, naughty children were good.
Deserts came to life and grew green trees.
People who were hungry and thirsty found food and water. When he played the notes, children who couldn’t sleep fell asleep.
When he showed his unique talent to the world, it appeared that they all went to school and everyone could read and write.
When he played his music, the dead flowers had their colours back.
Wherever he played his songs, people followed him everywhere.
