Safe Routes to School

In 2004 the school was successful in gaining a Safe Routes to School grant.  Children worked closely with the LEA representatives to produce a Transport Plan in which they identified the routes pupils use to walk to Clydach Junior School.  Also identified were:
  • concerns about health and safety
  • proposals for ways to make improvements

Many people from the community were involved in the project which achieved the following outcomes:

  • a pavement outside the school
  • traffic calming measures in the streets around the school
  • notional footpaths
  • clearer 'No Entry' signs at the top of Twyn y Bedw Road
  • improvements to Lone Road including improved parking and a crossing area
  • improvements to Gellionen Road
  • improvements to crossing in Vardre Road

The school also:

  • piloted a walking bus
  • enjoyed cycling proficiency lessons
  • carried out surveys and monitored the way pupils travel to school
  • participated in 'Walk to School Week'.
