Personal and Social Education or PSE is a more recent addition to the curriculum. However, we feel confident that the attitudes and values, skills and knowledge are already being addressed and covered in school.
PSE encompasses both planned classroom activities which promote personal, social and healthy development and the wider school experience.
PSE will equip our pupils to be more informed, confident and skilled in order to take an active and responsible part in society and it will enhance learning, motivation, performance and achievement.
Through PSE we will promote the following attitudes and values:-
self respect
respect and consideration for others
acceptance of others, regardless of race, religion,
gender or disability
concern for fairness and justice
equality of opportunity
gender equality
independence of mind
responsibility
willingness to cooperate
sensitivity to the environment
the pursuit of truth
Through PSE we will promote the following personal and social skills :-
communication skills
inter-personal skills
intra personal skills (e.g. reflection)
decision making skills (e.g. analysing risk)
study skills (e.g. target setting)
practical skills (e.g. water safety)
Each class has a timetabled session of “Circle Time” which we believe is important in instilling good attitudes and values.
The School also has a School Council to encourage pupils to put their views forward.
Health Education
Health Education is an integral part of the school curriculum. It will be addressed in a variety of ways through topics such as Ourselves and during Physical Education lessons and activities. The school nurse contributes to our health education programme.
We are a member of the Healthy Schools Network and actively promote healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. We are proud to have achieved three healthy schools awards and are currently working on another.

Sex Education
The school’s policy on sex education is based on the policy document produced by the L.E.A. The subject is dealt with in a factual and sensitive manner. Pupils will be introduced to the reproduction cycle through Science.
Girls in Y5 are given a talk about menstruation and during Year 6 all pupils are given a talk by the school nurse about “Growing Up”. Parents will be given details of the content of the talk/video and will be invited to withdraw their child if they wish.
