Clydach Junior School A Curriculum Policy for History Introduction This policy outlines provision for History in our school.
The school policy for this provision reflects the consensus of opinion of the whole teaching staff. It has been drawn up as a result of staff discussion and has the agreement of the Governing Body and teachers.
The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of all staff.
The Nature of History History is our record of what happened in the past and why. It involves children in studying men, women and children, in different societies, cultures and countrieS. Through history children can learn and understand something about the past and its influence on life today. A study of history contributes to children's knowledge and understanding of other peoples' countries and cultures. Children are encouraged to base their knowledge of the past by studying surviving evidence. The evidence is often incomplete and the whole picture of what happened in the past is often open to interpretation. We plan to develop the pupils' ability to aquire evidence from historical sources and form their own judgements about their reliability and value.
History is a skills based curriculum area and many of the skills contribute to and enrich other areas of the curriculum.
Our chief aim is that all our pupils will enjoy history and develop a curiosity about the past which encourages under-standing of the present.
Entitlement The national curriculum programme of study takes the form of one attainment target. At Key Stage 2, all children are taught three study units, one unit of local history and a thematic study.
Implementation All history activities are planned to enable pupils to develop the specific skills described in the History Attainment target. The level descriptions describe the types and range of performance which pupils working at a particular level should characteristically demonstrate.
At Key Stage 2, all .pupils will study the following units once in the school's four year Curriculum plan:-
(i) Three Study Units (ii) A unit of local history (iii) A thematic study
Years 3 & 4 These pupils will study SU.1, which is 'Life in Early Wales and Britain'. They will examine the Roman invasion and its impact on Wales and Britian. They will also study the historical theme of 'Houses and Households'.
Years 5 & 6 These pupils will study SU.2, which is 'Life in Wales and Britain in Tudor and Stuart Times', which involves studying major personalities and events of that time together with aspects of everyday life. Pupils will also be introduced to 'Life in Modern Wales and Britain' (SU.3). Pupils will also be taught about living and working conditions in a contrasting period. We have chosen 'The Age of the Second World War'.
The local history study unit (SU.4) will take the form of a discovery trail around the local area, looking at the changes in Clydach during the Industrial Revolution and also including Clydach during the Second World War.
Children will have opportunities to learn about the past from a range of historical sources and a variety of reference books and materials some of which are available in schools and others which will be borrowed from the County's Educational Learning Resources for Schools Library.
Children will have the opportunity to visit museums and places of historical interest in the school year.
Children are encouraged to bring items of interest to school.
Links between history and other curriculum areas are used where appropriate and these are identified on the curriculum framework.
Children will have opportunities to use the following resources:- pictures, photographs, camera, books, tape recorders, artefacts and games. Most of these are kept in a central resource area.
Special Educational Needs/Equal access It is a policy of the school to help pupils with SEN to gain access to all History activities where possible. Where appropriate pupils with learning difficulties will gain access to the curriculum using ICT.
Assessment Each area of work will be assessed by the class teacher and recorded in the half yearly report, and the final year's report to the parent. A selection of work will be kept from each class by the coordinator. |
