The Foundation Subjects and R.E.
History
Through history children can learn and understand something about the past and its influence on life today. At Clydach we believe that history is best approached through first hand experiences and wherever possible we use artefacts, photographs and visits to places of historical interest. We are fortunate in having a wealth of history on our doorstep.

Geography
Geography is concerned with the study of places, the human and physical processes which shape them and the people who live in them. Children study their local area, their county, Wales and localities in the UK, EEC and other parts of the world.

Information Communication Technology (ICT)
Our society is becoming more and more reliant on ICT and so we
try to make our pupils aware of the implications of ICT and to develop their confidence, skills and knowledge in this area.
All classes have an interactive ICT system which is linked to the internet. We use a variety of software to develop language skills, word processing, logical thinking, handling data and to create pictures etc.

Design and Technology (DT)
Design and Technology is essentially a practical subject. It involves the children in the designing, making and evaluating of things. It allows them to develop their knowledge and skills by working with a range of material and enables pupils to put into practice key skills from other subject areas in a meaningful context.

Art
We aim to give pupils opportunities to express themselves creatively using a variety of materials and techniques and to promote the enjoyment of art. Pupils will learn about the history of art and about the life and work of a variety of artists.

Physical Education
Children will enjoy a rich variety of experiences in P.E. These will include gymnastics, dance, swimming and a variety of games including hockey, rugby, soccer, short tennis, cricket and netball. We are particularly keen to develop the concepts of fair play and honest competition and to develop an understanding of the importance of exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Music
All pupils are encouraged to take part in music. Every child
learns to play the recorder and a peripatetic violin teacher visits the school once a week. Pupils will have opportunities to perform, to compose, and to listen to and appreciate music. Music plays an important part in life of the school and we aim to encourage the enjoyment and understanding of this subject. See Extra Curricular Music

Welsh
Very few pupils attending Clydach Junior have bilingual backgrounds. Therefore we promote a “Welsh ethos” within the school – the Cwricwlwm Cymreig.
Welsh is taught as a second language with a strong emphasis on bilingualism. Incidental Welsh is used whenever appropriate. Teaching staff are supported by a Welsh Teacher Adviser who visits the school regularly during the year. Click here to see our Welsh Policy.
R.E.
Religious Education is compulsory within the primary school curriculum and is taught in accordance with the Agreed Syllabus for R.E. (1994).Emphasis is given to the study of Christianity but attention is also given to the significance of other faiths and cultures.
Whole school assemblies are held on a daily basis. These assemblies deal mainly with moral issues. Each term two classes each hold a class assembly to which parents are invited. Every Friday a “Praise Assembly” is held in which children’s achievements are acknowledged. Parents may exercise their right to withdraw pupils from R.E. and collective worship.
