The Core Subjects
English
All learning takes place through language and this makes English
the most important subject on the curriculum of this school. We want all children to develop the essential skills of communicating fluently and meaningfully through speech and the written word. We also want all pupils to appreciate the importance of reading and to enjoy reading for pleasure. (See our Guidelines for Reading). We believe neat presentation and handwriting is very important. All children have a reading record and weekly spelling test. In Y5/6 pupils are set for English.

Maths
In our teaching of mathematics we are trying to equip children with numerical skills and knowledge. We believe the ability to recall tables and number facts quickly and accurately is very important for good computation. Mental Arithmetic is given daily.
We want our pupils to understand mathematics, to think logically and clearly and to become confident in and enjoy maths. They are introduced to a wide variety of mathematical experiences. Pupils in Y5/6 are set for mathematics.

Science
Science in the primary school is about learning through experience. Such learning involves observing, predicting, hypothesising, recording and drawing conclusions.
Whenever possible we use first hand experiences within the classroom or the local environment for our teaching. By relating what we teach to where we are, children can recognise the relevance of their learning experiences. We are fortunate that our immediate neighbourhood provides a wealth of opportunities to enrich the curriculum e.g. the river, the canal, Craigefnparc Bird Reserve etc. The Science curriculum is also enriched by visits further afield e.g. Techniquest, XLWales.
