Welsh Castles

Wales, the 'Land of Castles' is a stirring reminder of the warlike medieval period. Conquering Normans were the first castle builders, followed by battling English kings and Welsh princes who built formidable strongholds in strategic locations along the coast and deep in the mountains.

Castles and exhibitions throughout Wales tell the story of princely heroes. Llywelyn the Great, reputedly born at Dolwyddelan Castle in 1173, was a forceful leader who kept England at bay. His grandson, Llywelyn the Last, was less successful. A memorial at Cilmery near Builth Wells marks the spot where he died in battle in 1282. The early 1400s saw a renaissance in Welsh fortunes when the charismatic Owain Glyndwr led a final uprising against England. But times were changing. Just 80 years later, the unthinkable had happened - Harri Tudur, a Welshman born in Pembroke Castle, became Henry VII, first of the Tudor monarchs.
